Every locksmith website in Manchester claims 15 minutes to everywhere. A map disagrees. Here is where we actually go, and roughly how long it actually takes from Salford, including the bits that are further than we'd like.

The ten Greater Manchester boroughs

This is our service area. All of it, 24 hours a day, no call-out fee.

Typical means typical. Rush hour on the M60 is rush hour on the M60, and 3am is quicker than 5pm. If we're going to be longer than the number above, we say so on the phone rather than letting you wait and wonder.

Neighbourhoods and towns

Inside those boroughs, the places we get called to most:

Overnight

Between roughly 11pm and 6am, add nothing to the price and take 30-45 minutes to anywhere in the ten boroughs. The roads are empty; the difference is that we're coming from home rather than from a job.

Where we don't go

We used to have pages claiming we were the local locksmith in Chester, Crewe and Eastham. We aren't. They're 35-45 miles away in Cheshire and the Wirral, and turning up an hour and a half after you rang is not a service.

Those pages still exist, and they now say so honestly:

If you're in one of those, use a locksmith with a real address near you. The Master Locksmiths Association publishes a searchable register at locksmiths.co.uk and it's a reasonable place to start.

Questions people actually ask

Which areas of Greater Manchester do you actually cover?

All ten boroughs: Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Bolton, Oldham, Wigan, Rochdale, Bury and Tameside. We are based at 25 Fairhope Ave in Salford, M6 8AF, so times vary: 15 to 25 minutes to Manchester city centre and Salford, 20 to 35 minutes to Trafford, Stockport and Bury, and 25 to 45 minutes to Bolton, Oldham, Wigan, Rochdale and Tameside. Overnight it is 30 to 45 minutes to any of them because the roads are empty.

Do you cover Chester, Crewe, Warrington or the Wirral?

No. Those are in Cheshire and Merseyside, between 18 and 45 miles from our base, and we would be an hour or more away. We used to have pages claiming otherwise and we have taken those claims down. If you are outside Greater Manchester you want a locksmith with a real address near you, and the Master Locksmiths Association register at locksmiths.co.uk is a sensible place to look.

Why is your response time longer than other locksmiths claim?

Because we are quoting a drive, not a marketing figure. Salford to Wigan is about 17 road miles. Nobody does that in 15 minutes, at any hour, in any vehicle. Most locksmith sites publish the same 15 to 30 minute claim on every area page regardless of distance, which a map disproves in about four seconds. We would rather tell you 40 minutes and arrive in 35 than tell you 15 and have you ring someone else at minute 25.

Do you charge more for areas further away?

No. The price is the same in Wigan as it is in Salford, and there is no call-out fee anywhere in the ten boroughs. Distance affects how long you wait, not what you pay. It also does not change at night, at weekends or on bank holidays: a 3am Sunday call in Rochdale costs the same as a 2pm Tuesday call in the city centre.
