Trafford is two boroughs wearing one name. M32, M33 and M41 are streets of interwar semis with a lock on the front and a lock on the back. M17 is one of the largest industrial estates in Europe. Same borough, nothing else in common.
Stretford, Sale, Urmston, Flixton, Old Trafford, Firswood, Trafford Park. About 20 to 35 minutes from Salford.
The semis: it's the back door
Sale, Urmston and Stretford are largely 1930s semis, and the call is almost always about the back door rather than the front.
Front doors get replaced. Back doors get ignored for forty years, and they are the ones facing a garden nobody can see into. The two we find constantly:
- Original mortice, seized solid, never oiled
- 2-lever back door lock that does not meet BS3621
- uPVC back door fitted in 2005, gearbox now stiff
- Key-operated window locks missing entirely
That second one matters. A lot of home policies require BS3621 on all external doors, not just the front. People upgrade the front, feel secure, and find out at claim time. £85-140 fitted.
Trafford Park and the units
M17 is a completely different business: warehouses, distribution, workshops and offices. Mostly booked, mostly out of hours so we do not stop your operation.
Match days: tell us
When Old Trafford is full, M16 does not work like a normal postcode. Roads shut, parking suspended, traffic backed onto the A56 for an hour either side. Same at Emirates Old Trafford in the cricket season, and the Trafford Centre at Christmas is its own event.
It does not change the price. It absolutely changes the arrival time, and we would rather tell you 50 minutes on a match day than promise 25 and leave you on a doorstep watching the crowd go past.

Questions people actually ask
My back door lock in Sale has seized. Replace or repair?
Repair first, almost every time. The back doors on Trafford's 1930s semis usually still have their original mortice lock, and a seized one is normally decades of dust and dried oil rather than a broken mechanism. A strip and service is £40 to £70 and gives you back a lock built to a standard modern replacements struggle to match. The exception is if your insurer requires BS3621 and the existing lock is a 2-lever, in which case it has to be replaced regardless of condition, at £85 to £140 fitted.
I upgraded my front door lock. Does my back door need doing too?
Check the policy wording, because a lot of them say all external doors rather than final exit door, and this is the single most common gap we find in Trafford. People spend money on the front, feel secure, and leave a 2-lever lock on a back door that faces a garden nobody can see into, which is precisely where anybody sensible would try. If your wording says all external doors and your back door is not BS3621, the claim gets argued. A BS3621 5-lever is £85 to £140 fitted.
How long will you take to reach Trafford?
20 to 35 minutes from Salford normally. On a match day at Old Trafford, or during the cricket at Emirates Old Trafford, M16 stops behaving like a normal postcode: roads shut, parking suspended, and the A56 backed up for an hour either side. That can push it to 50 minutes and we will tell you that when you ring rather than promise 25 and leave you watching the crowd go past. The price does not change either way.
Do you work on the units in Trafford Park?
Yes, and it is a good part of what we do in M17. Shutter locks, access control, panic bars, door closers and master key systems, plus out-of-hours lockouts. Most of it is booked rather than emergency, and we will schedule around your operation rather than stopping it, including evenings and weekends at no extra cost. Business accounts are invoiced. If you are rekeying more than twice a year because of staff turnover, ask us to cost fobs instead.
