In most of Greater Manchester, you choose the lock. In SK9, the contents policy chooses it, and the sums insured are high enough that insurers write conditions most people never read until they need to.
About 16 miles from us, 30-40 minutes down the A34.
The spec is usually higher than people think
High-value contents policies in Alderley Edge routinely require more than the standard BS3621 front door:
- TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond on every external door
- Not just the final exit, back, side, garage, garden room
- Key-operated locks on accessible windows, including first floor
- A safe of a specified cash or jewellery rating
- Alarm set whenever the property is unoccupied
Miss one and the claim is argued. Bring us the policy schedule before you buy hardware, the most expensive mistake here is fitting 3-star to the front door when the wording says all external doors, and finding out at claim time.
Safes
More safes per street here than anywhere else we work, and the calls are always the same three: the combination died with someone, the battery went flat and the keypad is dead, or the bolt has jammed and the door won't move.
Most open non-destructively. When they don't, drilling is a last resort and we tell you the cost of the repair before we start, not after. We'll also tell you honestly if your safe isn't rated for what's in it, a £150 fire safe from a catalogue is not holding jewellery, whatever the box said. See safe opening.
Gates and long drives
A gated property has a lock problem nobody mentions: if the gate motor fails, we can't reach the front door either. Tell us on the phone if you're behind an automated gate and whether it has a manual release, because it changes what we bring and how long it takes.

Questions people actually ask
My insurer specifies locks on all external doors, not just the front. What does that cost?
Budget £65 to £110 per door for TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders, or £75 to £130 for SS312 Diamond, fitted. A typical Alderley Edge property with a front door, back door, side door and garage door comes to roughly £280 to £450 for the lot. BS3621 mortice locks, where the wording asks for those instead, are £85 to £140 per door. The mistake we see most often is people fitting 3-star to the front door only, because that is what the salesman quoted, when the policy wording says all external doors. Bring us the schedule and we will price against what it actually says.
I've lost the combination to my safe. Can you open it without wrecking it?
Usually yes. Most safes can be manipulated or bypassed non-destructively, which costs £110 to £260 and leaves the safe usable afterwards. If yours cannot, drilling is a last resort and we tell you the cost of repairing the drill point before we start rather than presenting it afterwards. If the problem is a flat battery or a dead keypad rather than a lost code, that is a cheaper job at £70 to £140 and often just a bypass and a new battery pack.
How long to reach Alderley Edge, honestly?
30 to 40 minutes from our base in Salford, about 16 miles down the A34. Overnight it is closer to 25. It stretches past 45 in Friday evening traffic. That is a real drive, not the 15 minutes that every locksmith site claims for every town. Alderley Edge is still nearer to us than Wigan, which we also cover, and the price is identical either way.
My property is behind an automated gate. Does that change anything?
It can, and it is worth mentioning when you ring. If the gate motor has failed as well, or if the gate is the thing you are locked out of, we cannot simply drive up to the front door and start work. Most automated gates have a manual release, usually a key-operated override on the motor housing, and knowing whether yours does changes what we bring. Tell us on the phone and we will plan for it rather than discovering it at the end of your drive.
