Styal is two different lock problems standing next to each other, and a lot of locksmiths only carry the parts for one of them.
The old half
The village around the Quarry Bank estate is largely 18th and 19th century mill cottages, with the doors to match: solid timber, narrow stiles, and mortice locks that predate anybody's insurance policy. Some are still on original rim locks and old lever mechanisms that no key-cutting kiosk in the country can copy.
Two things matter here. First: these can almost always be repaired. A seized lever mortice is usually a century of dirt, not a dead lock, and a service is £40-70 against £140 to replace. Second: many of these are listed or in a conservation area, so bolting a modern euro cylinder onto the front is not automatically allowed. We'll tell you where the line is before we touch it.
The new half
Then there's the estate housing towards the Airport and Heald Green: standard composite doors, standard euro cylinders, standard multipoint gearboxes, and the standard failure. Handle gets stiff, handle needs both hands, gearbox shears.
Airport-side
Styal sits on the M90 side, so we get the specific one: you're flying at 6am, the door won't lock, and the taxi is outside. We answer at 4am. Response overnight is closer to 25 minutes because the A34 is empty. See Manchester Airport.

Questions people actually ask
Can you cut a key for an old mortice lock in a Styal cottage?
Usually yes, and not at a kiosk. Old lever mortice locks were made before standard key profiles existed, so a copy has to be cut to the lock rather than copied from a key. If you still have one working key we can copy it, £25 to £55. If you have none, we take the lock off, read the levers and cut to the mechanism, which costs more and takes longer but avoids replacing a lock that is older than the road. We will always try that before suggesting a new lock.
My cottage is listed. Can you fit a modern lock to it?
Sometimes, and sometimes not, and it matters more than people expect. Listed building consent can cover the front door, its ironmongery and its appearance, so bolting a modern euro cylinder onto a period door is not automatically allowed and can be an offence. There are discreet options: repairing the original, fitting a compliant lock on the inside face, or a mortice that meets BS3621 while looking correct. We will tell you where the line is before we touch it, and if you need consent we will say so rather than fitting and leaving you with the problem.
How fast can you get to Styal from Salford?
25 to 35 minutes in normal traffic, and closer to 25 overnight when the A34 is empty. It is about 12 miles, which makes Styal nearer to us than Wigan, which we also cover. If the Airport is busy or Handforth Dean is at a standstill it stretches. We will tell you a real number when you ring rather than the 15 minutes that every locksmith website promises to every town.
My flight is at 6am and my door won't lock. Will you come out?
Yes. The phone is answered 24 hours and overnight is our fastest response to Styal because the roads are clear, typically about 25 minutes. This is a genuinely common call from the Airport side, and it is almost always a multipoint gearbox that has been getting stiff for weeks. There is no night surcharge, so a 4am callout costs exactly what a 4pm one costs.
