Warrington built more houses between 2005 and 2020 than almost anywhere else in the North West. Every one of them got a composite front door. Every one of those doors got a multipoint gearbox. Those gearboxes are now ten to twenty years old, and they are all reaching the end of their lives at roughly the same time.

WA1 to WA5, about 18 miles from Salford: 30 to 45 minutes. Stockton Heath, Latchford, Grappenhall, Padgate, Woolston, Great Sankey, Penketh, Chapelford, Birchwood, Culcheth.

Why Warrington specifically

Most towns have a mix: Victorian mortice locks, 60s rim locks, some uPVC, some composite. Warrington's newer estates are almost uniformly composite doors on multipoint gearboxes, all installed within a fifteen year window.

That has one useful consequence: we know what is behind the door before we arrive. Chapelford, Great Sankey and the Omega-side estates run a fairly narrow set of gearboxes, and we carry them. On a good day that turns a two-visit job into one.

It has one unpleasant consequence too: your neighbours' doors are failing at the same time as yours, because they were fitted the same month. If three houses on your street have had the handle go stiff this year, yours is next.

The warning you get

A multipoint gearbox never fails without notice. It goes stiff. Then it needs both hands. Then it needs a shove. Then it shears, usually on the coldest morning of the year, with you on the wrong side.

Stiff: £45-85 service. Sheared: £60-120 plus a possible lockout. Composite doors are worse than uPVC for this, because the slab is heavier and drops harder onto the keeps.

Omega, Birchwood and the units

The other half of Warrington is commercial: Omega, Birchwood Park, the Gemini estates and a lot of distribution units. Different work entirely, and mostly booked rather than emergency: shutter locks, access control, panic bars and master key systems. Invoiced.

Questions people actually ask

My composite front door has gone stiff. Is that the gearbox?

Almost certainly. A composite door slab is heavier than uPVC, so when the hinges wear and the door drops even a couple of millimetres, the hooks and rollers start binding against the keeps and the gearbox has to force them. That is what the stiffness is. Caught at that stage it is a £45 to £85 service and realignment. Once the gearbox shears it is £60 to £120 and the door will not lock at all, or worse, will not unlock with you outside. On the Warrington estates this is the single most common call we get.

Why do so many doors fail at once on Warrington estates?

Because they were all fitted in the same few months. Warrington built enormous numbers of houses between 2005 and 2020 and each estate got the same doors from the same supplier at the same time. Multipoint gearboxes have a fairly predictable life, so an estate built in 2010 starts producing failures around the same window. If three houses on your street have had the handle go stiff this year, that is not coincidence, and yours is on the same clock.

How long does it take you to get to Warrington?

30 to 45 minutes from our base in Salford, about 18 miles. It stretches if the M62 or the Thelwall Viaduct is queuing, which is often. Overnight it is closer to 30. That is a genuine drive, and we would rather tell you 40 minutes and arrive in 35 than tell you 15 and have you ring someone else while you wait.

Do you cover Birchwood and the business parks as well as houses?

Yes. Omega, Birchwood Park, Gemini and the distribution units around them are a good part of what we do in WA, and it is different work from a domestic callout: shutter locks, access control, panic bars, door closers and master key systems, mostly booked rather than emergency. We invoice business accounts. If you have a unit with staff turnover and you are rekeying more than twice a year, ask us about fobs rather than keys.
